I’ll never forget the phone call Amanda received from her GP.
She was told to come in immediately and bring a support person to the appointment. When we arrived the GP was waiting for us. She insisted we leave our baby girl with the nurses while we sat in the consultation.
Even before we knew exactly what was happening, we knew something was seriously wrong.
The shock of seeing that initial scan will forever be scarred into my memory. It was a large tumour behind Amanda’s sternum. It was diagnosed as primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma. Words we had never heard before and never imagined we would have to learn.
Our lives were never going to be the same after that.
What followed was a blur of doctors’ appointments, scans, chemo treatments, phone calls and uncertainty. But while all of this was happening, life at home didn’t stop.
We had a three-year-old daughter and a nine-month-old baby girl.
Two little girls who still needed their mum and dad every single day.
And somehow, I had to keep going.
The truth is, I was scared. Really scared.
I didn’t know what I was going to do. I didn’t know how I was going to get through it. There were moments when the weight of everything felt completely overwhelming.
I was trying to be there for Amanda while watching the woman I love go through cancer. The chemo weeks were tough, but the neutropenic weeks terrified the hell out of me.
I was trying to be a dad to two children who were far too young to understand what was happening. I was trying to keep our home and our lives together while, inside, I was falling apart.
And then there were the thoughts I never wanted to have.
What if our girls grow up without their mum?
That fear has been one of the hardest things I have ever had to carry.
The sleepless nights. The endless appointments. The waiting for results. The uncertainty. The constant fear of what the next phone call might bring.
There were days when simply getting through the day felt like an achievement.
I honestly don’t know how we would have managed without the incredible support of both my parents and Amanda’s parents. They stepped in when we needed them most, helping with the kids, helping us get through the practical things, and giving us the support we desperately needed when everything felt like too much.
Cancer doesn’t just happen to the person who gets diagnosed.
It happens to the whole family.
It takes away your sense of security. It changes your priorities. It makes you realise how quickly everything you thought was certain can disappear.
And through all of this, Amanda has had to fight a battle that no one should ever have to face.
I’ve watched her endure things I wish I could have taken away from her.
I would’ve give anything to be able to carry this for her.
But it’s a battle that she has won, through her own determination to see her daughters grow up.
I’m raising funds for The Longest Day, to support people and families affected by cancer and help fund vital cancer research, support and care.
Our family has experienced firsthand how frightening, exhausting and isolating cancer can be. We know how much people rely on support during the darkest moments, whether that support comes from loved ones, healthcare professionals, cancer organisations or the wider community.
We want to help make sure that support is there for others facing their own cancer journey.
We never expected cancer to become part of our family’s story.
But it has changed us forever.
And now, we want to turn one of the hardest experiences of our lives into something that can help others.
For Amanda. For our children. For every family facing cancer.
