Longest Day of (mini) Golf - Saturday 11 December

The first stage of my 2021 Longest Day of Golf challenge was completed on Saturday when daughters Alex and Caitlin and me all played 72-holes at the Wetlands Mini Golf Centre in Wheelers Hill.

We had heaps of fun navigating both the undercover course and the jungle course. Lots of laughs as the girls quickly remembered all the golf tips provided by their Nan & Pop over the years. They don't listen to me regarding putting (and for good reason). Caitlin yet again commented that 'you're not very good at this for someone who plays a lot, are you?"

Thanks to the Centre Manager, Fraser, we started just prior to opening time at 10am and finished at around 12.30pm. Only rules were we'd pick up after six putts on any given hole, didn't need to score but would tally hole in one's. There weren't too many - just a couple each. The Centre has recently been refurbished and both courses are really good - interesting holes, lots of challenges but without over the top gadgetry. Great introductory facility for golf, reasonably priced (we paid to play) and highly recommended. It can viewed here at www.minigolf.com.au

Aside from the worthwhile and relevant cause, a key part for me of doing the Longest Day is just having fun playing our sport. Today was no exception, plus I got to share it with the girls. Both my kids are understandably busy with their own lives and it was great to just spend a couple of hours together, chatting about everything and anything while we were putting the golf balls around.

They can both play golf too - Alex is methodical and neat while Caitlin has great eye-hand coordination, but loves hitting it hard and taking on shots. Who knows, maybe mini golf might be the thing that makes them want to play more often - especially as Dad is easy to beat!

The final stage of this year's Longest Day for me moves to my home club of Commonwealth on Wednesday 22 December when 72-holes awaits. Lots of practice needed between now and then, but really looking forward to playing golf all day to start the summer break! Best wishes to everyone else doing the challenge too.

The Longest Day of Golf - Twice the fun in 2021

After missing out in 2020 due to injury, I'm undertaking two Longest Day of Golf challenges in 2021.

- On Saturday 11 December, daughters Alex and Caitlin  and I are playing 72-holes of mini-golf at Wetlands Adventure Minigolf  in Wheelers Hill.

- On Wednesday 22 December, I'll be back at Commonwealth Golf Club with good friend, Greg Oakford to complete four rounds of golf in one day. Starting at 6am, we're aiming to be finished by sunset - 72 holes that's so much fun to do.

Both challenges meet the new mantra that 'All golf is golf'. We're all combining a game we love for a worthwhile and relevant cause to all golfers.

At both challenges, we'll be testing our skill, strength, and stamina to raise funds for Cancer Council and thinking of our friend, club mate and long-time golf volunteer, John Scrivener who sadly lost his life after a lengthy battle with skin cancer.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, with two in three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70 and we want to help change this.

If you're able to, please consider supporting the Greenhill girls, Greg and me to help in this quest.

Thank you for your consideration and we'll keep everyone posted as to how we go.
